Looking for things to do in Devon? We’ve done the research for you! As a family of three generations with a wide range of interests, we love exploring fun days out in East Devon. So, whether you’ve got a family or group of friends to entertain, or just planning a solo day out look below for some of our favourite recommendations.
The Donkey Sanctuary
Based just on the outskirts of Sidmouth, this wonderful Donkey sanctuary boasts acres of fun and its doesn’t cost a penny to enter! Interact with the donkeys along the scenic trails, eat in the new family friendly restaurant and learn about the history of the charity and how they have helped thousands of people around the world to look after their donkeys in the new Exhibition Barn.
National Trust Visits
Devon is home to a plethora of National Trust sites, from country house estates to glorious gardens there is always something new to see. One of our favourites is ‘A la Ronde’- an 18th century, 16-sided house near Lympstone, Exmouth. This quirky building has a fascinating interior designed by two spinster cousins, Mary and Jane Parminter who travelled around Europe and brought back many treasures to decorate with. One of the features includes a shell-encrusted gallery with nearly 25,000 shells!
Seaton Tramway
A fun activity for all the family, this stunning tramway operates between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in the Axe Valley. Travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves it provides an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. Seaton is a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO world Hertitage Site, so be sure to check out the Seaton Jurassic educational centre whilst you’re here.
Clip ‘n climb
Based in Exeter by the Quay, this is the ultimate vertical playground. With fun climbing walls ranging in difficulty, it’s a great day out for the young, and young at heart! Be sure to book online or call ahead to book yourselves a slot. If climbing isn’t for you, the quay is a beautiful area to explore with some lovely cafes and restaurants to pass the time.
Crealy Adventure Park
From rollercoasters, to water rides and indoor play areas, Crealy Adventure Park is the South West’s number one family day out. With over 200 cute cuddly farm and zoo animals there is something for everyone to enjoy and you are guaranteed to have a fantastic day out with the kids in Devon.
National Marine Aquarium
In Plymouth you will find the UK’s largest Aquarium. The NMA offers a range of exciting exhibits and activities run by the Ocean Conservation Trust to connect as many people as possible to the ocean. With interactive talks and shows, it’s a great educational day out for all ages.
Watersports
One of our favourite ways to explore the beautiful Devon Coastline is from the water. Exewake in Exmouth offers fun filled water sports from water-skiing to inflatable rides for all ages and abilities. If you don’t fancy getting in the water, then maybe a floating yoga class is for you- these weekly classes take place on the deck of their barge and include a boat ride from Exmouth Marina. Or if you fancy kayaking or paddle boarding, Jurassic Paddle Sports in Sidmouth have plenty of equipment for hire and are more than happy to show you the ropes if it’s your first time.
Mackerel fishing
Pack your sea legs and head to Beer or Lyme Regis, from here you can hop on a fishing trip around the bay in search of the mackerel that return to the shallows of the coast during the summer months. If your lucky enough to catch some, why not try lighting up a BBQ for a fresh seaside dinner. If you return empty handed, fear not as both towns have delicious fish and chips on offer.
If your looking for more inspiration and ideas, we’ve shared a list of all our personal recommendations for things to do and places to eat on our Discover the Area page.
