Impressive cliff walks, the riverside bird sanctuary and open country of nearby Woodbury Common are all factors which rightly make Budleigh Salterton so popular. Woodbury Common is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest with over 70 species of bird, many butterflies and reptiles, rare flora and fauna and is excellent for walking, riding, cycling or just picnicking. The town has an excellent choice of shops and amenities offering ‘old world’ standards of service. There is also a good selection of restaurants, pubs and a wonderful ice cream shop! The pebbled beach in Budleigh Salterton stretches for two miles and is perfect for bathing in the crystal-clear water on a summer’s day to a wild and windy walk for your Winter break. On Sundays (weather depending) you can watch the local fishermen bringing their catch ashore and nothing beats buying the fresh fish and cooking it for supper!

Famous as the birth place of Sir Walter Raleigh, East Budleigh is a wonderfully preserved village which was already well established at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 and is two miles south of Budleigh Salterton. It has excellent village inns, tea rooms, a garage and stores. The pretty village of Colaton Raleigh lies nestled between the lovely River Otter valley and the wider open spaces of Woodbury common. Enticing green lanes and footpaths radiate from the village, offering delightful countryside and river walks with lovely picnic spots and abundant wildlife. The village retains its own shop and pub- nearby historic 63 acre formal gardens and arboretum at Bicton.
