Exmouth & Topsham

A two mile sandy beach and beautiful estuary

Choose Exmouth for your Exmouth holiday cottage and you are sure to have found the best British seaside holiday resort in Devon. Exmouth’s two-mile sandy beach is great for paddling, swimming and building sandcastles. There are rock pools and areas suitable for windsurfing and water skiing. The town has a wealth of tea houses, restaurants and take-aways, numerous historic inns, night spots and live shows. But on the other hand, if you seek none of these, then you will probably remain unaware of their existence, as Exmouth is also for those who enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors, but with modern comforts close at hand. A bustling waterfront with the constant activity of working and pleasure craft, windsurfing, water skiing, boat trips to Torbay or up the River Exe to Topsham, are all on offer. Shoreside is an exciting new area that opens in 2021 and will offer all kinds of watersport activities. Bus and rail services link Exmouth to the Cathedral City of Exeter just 12 miles away and the M5 interchange is also within easy access. Dartmoor, Exmoor and Torbay are all within an easy drive.

The Exe estuary supports an abundance of birdlife, including Sandpipers and rare Avocets. An Exe Estuary Circular ticket which combines rail and ferry travel runs between Exeter, Exmouth, Starcross and Exeter in either direction. Exmouth also marks the Western Gateway to the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. UNESCO heritage status was given to the coast of Devon and Dorset in 2001 in recognition of its unique landscape, which spans 185 million years of Earth history. One of the real joys of staying in one of our Exmouth holiday homes is that it is possible to enjoy the best of the traditional beach holiday in one of and also engage in a wide range of activities, with Exeter a short and scenic train-ride away.

Topsham lies on the banks of the River Exe, the town has an ‘olde worlde’ charm all of its own and is ideally located between the cathedral City of Exeter, just 4 miles away, and the seaside resort Exmouth. First an ancient Roman settlement, Topsham became a Charter Town in 1300 and developed into a major British port renowned for shipbuilding. A stroll around its fascinating streets and passageways will reveal unique and quirky buildings with Dutch style houses from its maritime past built by merchants in the 17th Century, and fine examples of Georgian and Edwardian architecture. There are river walks and wildlife to be enjoyed with many a quiet place to sit and watch the sailing boats go by, a Saturday morning market, an abundance of characterful shops, restaurants and inns, and the Quay Centre selling its wares of antiques, bygones and collectables. Day trips are easily organized with regular buses to Exeter and Exmouth and by train to Exeter, Exmouth or further along the coast to Torbay. There are boat trips to be enjoyed from Topsham and bicycle hire is available to explore the Exe Estuary Trail of the National Cycle Network (Route 2) with access to both sides of the River. You can be as active or as quiet as you wish during your holiday in one of our Topsham holiday cottages with plenty of activities available for those wishing to seek them out, and lots to watch and absorb if you prefer the quiet life; an ideal choice offering something for every member of the family.
